I havent really thought of a topic, though thats what I have been trying to do since the past few days, but to no avail. So, I will allow my thoughts to roam freely, and lets see where this takes me to. Its been quite a week...not for me as I see it...but for a lot of people I know...a friend got committed (came as a pleasant surprise)...another one bought a cycle( huh...a cycle???) with his hard-earned salary...many others just got their first jobs (can imagine a lot of happy smiling faces). Something or the other is happening in everyone's life...and I desperately want something to happen in my life too...the past 4-5 months simply have flown away...home to office and office to home...really, monotonicity can be quite challening!!! I see that I am really not getting anything to write about... and in the meanwhile, I am feeling quite hungry!! So, I rummage through my room and finally get an open packet of 'Hide n Seek' biscuits....hmmm..tastes good...n whats that melting in my mouth....chocolate chips.....Chocolate!!!
Yeah..chocolate...in other words, heaven!! Few things in this world can indulge your senses as well as chocolate. There is something surreal about its taste...something which cannot be expressed...it's something which no one can say no to when offered...be it in the form of a pudding, chocolate cake, milkshake or simply a candy bar. Even the most adamant "health-conscious freak" goes weak in his knees when he sees someone relishing a chocolate bar in front of him and craves for a bite. I am amazed at how a color as insipid as brown, rarely among anyone's favourite colors, gets a whole new definition and life when associated with chocolate. Call it chocolate brown...and suddenly, we see it everywhere....tiles, roofs, jackets, shoes and even skin tan.
I think chocolate has a much deeper significance in life...Chocolate is the first thing a child demands from his parents as he grows up...much before toys, books, I-pods and bikes take up their share of his mind. My childhood is filled with memories, where we used to wait eagerly for the Independence days and Republic days, brimming with excitement on the D-day...eager to have our rightful share of chocolate sachets distributed in school. And who can forget birthdays, which were like mini-festivals, when a child learns his first lesson of bribery and blackmailing: "Yaar...main tera best friend hoon na...mujhe zyaada chocolates de...main tera homework kar doonga" or "Tune mujhe doosron se zyaada toffees nahi diye to main Maam ko complaint kar doonga ki tu use chudail bulata hai".
To say that chocolate is one of the most popular gifts in the world would be an understatement...it is truly the most universal gift anyone can ever give somebody...other than one's love of course!!! Be it any occasion, any festival, from something as modern as Valentine's day to something as traditional as Deepawali, chocolates have made their presence felt everywhere and are available in customized attires, to suit the mood of the occasion. And as far as Indians are concerned, every middle-class household has atleast one relative who lives abroad, and brings back the most exotic chocolates, in myriad shapes and sizes every couple of years or so. And then begin the attempts to please ur neighbourhood: "Mere bhai ke bete ke sasur ki behan ki beti abhi London se lauti hai...bahut sare chocolates layi hai...aap bhi lijiye thode se!!"
I really can't imagine this world without chocolate, a symbol of fun n joy, festivities and merrymaking, pleasure and desire, bonding and friendship...love and life!!! Hats off to the people of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations who are credited with the discovery of cacao beans, which ultimately give way to what we call Chocolate!!!
P.S 1: According to a British research, one in five women say they would say goodbye to their sex lives forever before chocolate!!! (No comments :P)
P.S 2: No, this is not an essay to be written in an application form for recruitment in Cadbury or Nestle!!!
P.S 3: If I had not found Hide n Seek to eat, have no iota of an idea on what topic this whole post would have been about.
P.S 4: For all those craving to eat a chocolate after reading this (I hope atleast somebody does), rush off to the nearest store and indulge urself!! :)
And finally,
P.S 5: Sorry for the misleading title...thats how movies are nowadays...cudn't resist it!! :P
well written ..way to go anna.. its cool how u have captured the precious little emotions associated with something as common as a chocolate ..
ReplyDeletequite the opposite happened with me though being constantly reminded of the ill-effects of chocolate right throughout my childhood.. but the joy on getting hands on it remained the same !
p.s. : for once i really thought your p.s. 2 was true :D
a nice read.... sort of nostalgic and makes me wanna relive those childhood days, specially the birthday parties where there was literally an overdose of chocolates :) .... and then again, those binging sessions which made me cross the "century mark" over and over again :D
ReplyDeletehowever, u cud have added a little more of love, or sex as the title demanded... PS1 for example :) .... all in all, an awesome article... eagerly waiting for the next one :)
really boring :P.....read only half...cudn't force myself to read the other....don't flaunt ur insipid life....u need some change...get out of that place!!
